Inventories begin as itemized lists of Native American ancestral remains and associated funerary objects cared for in a museum or collection.
1. Itemized lists are provided to lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations to identify interested parties for consultation.
2. After consultation has been initiated, itemized lists are revised and/or expanded to produce Inventories. These include detailed information that can help inform a determination of cultural affiliation, through continued consultation, with the ultimate goal of repatriation.
3. Upon determination of cultural affiliation, Inventories are used to draft and publish Notices of Inventory Completion (NIC) in the Federal Register.
4. After publication, lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, and/or Native Hawaiian organizations may submit a request for repatriation (a “claim”). Requests are reviewed and a response is provided. If no competing claims exist, repatriation is concluded with a Repatriation Statement that includes transferring control to the requestor.
